In the first year, students will acquire fundamental skills essential for a successful career in tourism management. They will develop a basic understanding of key subjects such as management, law, entrepreneurship, marketing, people management, and accounting, with a specific focus on issues involved in managing services within the tourism industry. Additionally, students will be exposed to business and communication skills, computing and IT skills, and independent learning. An introduction to virtual reality and augmented reality will provide them with an understanding of the techniques and applications involved in these emerging technologies.
Moving into the second year, students will expand their knowledge and skills in business management within the context of tourism. They will develop a better understanding of topics such as international culture and communications, retail travel operations, and consumer behavior. Furthermore, they will explore various sectoral applications within tourism management. The curriculum aims to foster independent learning, preparing students for the workplace and future research endeavors.
During the 16-week internship or industrial training, students will undertake a minimum 16-week internship or industrial training. This internship experience is designed to facilitate a smooth transition from the classroom to the working environment. Students will gain practical exposure, apply their knowledge, and develop valuable skills relevant to the tourism industry.
In the third year, students will leverage their previous studies and industrial experience to tackle practical and modern issues in tourism management. They will delve into strategic and marketing aspects, as well as environmental issues within the industry. The aim is to groom students as leaders in the tourism industry, equipped with the skills and knowledge to address these challenges. A final-year project will require students to explore a topic individually, allowing them to demonstrate their academic and practical abilities in their chosen area of study.
Students who joined the Bachelor (Hons) in Tourism Management at APU University Malaysia will have the option to apply for the APU-DMU Dual Degree Scheme. Under this Scheme, students will be able to get 2 Degree Certificates and transcripts upon graduation: 1 from Asia Pacific University (APU), Malaysia, and 1 from De Montfort University (DMU), UK. please note this is optional and costs GBP 375 Per year.
